Mahler & clarinet
The Nieuw Amsterdams Klarinet Kwartet will play unusual arrangements of movements from Mahler’s symphonies. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Bass clarinettist Jesse Faber puts it this way: 'Given the importance of the clarinet in Mahler’s symphonies, we consider his music to belong to us.'

Nieuw Amsterdams Klarinet Kwartet
Even though they play nothing but clarinets, the Nieuw Amsterdams Klarinet Kwartet is one of today’s most versatile ensembles. Their album Ode aan Amsterdam included the 'Funeral March' from Mahler’s Symphony no. 1 – in a ‘klezmer remix’, according to the NRC newspaper. ‘We have a strong bond with Mahler. He also took influences from Jewish music and worked them into new and bigger themes’, says the NAKK. The quartet enjoys playing with Mahler’s ideas about folk music and imaginary mountain landscapes. Today you’ll hear arrangements from three of his symphonies: Nos. 1, 4 and 7.
