During the Mahler Festival, the Ulrike Quade Company’s presentation ‘Mahler & Kokoschka’ will be returning to Theater Bellevue for three evenings. About obsessive love, desperation and adoration.
Alma Mahler: composer and Gustav Mahler’s widow.
Oskar Kokoschka: artist, writer, obsessed with Alma.
Alma Mahler wants to be revered. She wants to be the ultimate muse. In the artist Oskar Kokoschka, who is so hopelessly in love, she finds a willing victim. On the cusp of the roaring twenties, their affair is the talk of the town in avant-garde Vienna. Alma Mahler, uncomfortable with the intensity of their love, leaves Kokoschka.
In a desperate attempt to keep her, he has a mannequin made of her. He makes paintings of the mannequin which also accompanies him to the theatre until, besotted by passion and drink, he beheads her during a nocturnal rite.
