Julius Drake, Sophie Rennert & Ashley Riches
For five days during this festival, the theme in the Recital Hall will be Mahler’s greatest songs. Pianist Julius Drake, perhaps today’s best-known song accompanist, will accompany young singers, today in a series of songs by Alma Mahler as well as her friends and her lovers. Soloists are mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert and baritone Ashley Riches.
The young composer Alma Schindler set her musical ambitions aside when she married Gustav Mahler in 1902. Although her oeuvre may be modest, her fame as a muse – not only of Mahler himself, but also of the composer Von Zemlinsky, the architect Gropius, and the artist Kokoschka – is legendary. Today her own songs will be in the spotlight. These intense, late-romantic songs seem to enable us to look directly into her soul. You’ll also hear works by composers she befriended, like Schönberg and Berg. Pianist Julius Drake will accompany Sophie Rennert, ‘a mezzo of many colors’, according to The Art Desk. Baritone Ashley Riches is another fast-rising star, called ‘one of today’s best young voices’ by The Guardian.
