Dreams of classical music in Iran

Tickets are available from €12.50

It was Persian avant-garde composer Nader Mashayekhi’s dream to play modern classical music in his home country Iran. His dream came true when he was asked to be the Tehran Symphony Orchestra’s conductor. Together with the much-censored musicians he tries to make the orchestra worthy of the international stage. In turn the music broadens the young musicians’ horizons, giving them hope and confidence. After the 2009 elections, it became impossible for the orchestra to play in Teheran and Nader was forced to leave Iran. What will happen to his dream and the young musicians he left behind?

Filmmaker Frank Scheffer recorded the passionate composer while he rehearsed with the young musicians, wandering a desolate desert landscape and an abandoned village, looking for inspiration for new compositions and challenging performances, then later back in Vienna where he reminisces about his time in Iran.

This film is screened with Dutch subtitles.
