Mezzo-soprano: Feride Büyükdenktas
Tenor: Stuart Jackson
Piano: Julius Drake
Julius Drake, Feride Büyükdenktaş & Stuart Jackson
For five days during this festival, the theme in the Recital Hall will be Mahler’s greatest songs. Pianist Julius Drake, perhaps today’s best-known song accompanist, will accompany young singers. Today’s soloists are Feride Büyükdenktaş and Stuart Jackson. Together they’ll sing the moving Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), in Mahler’s own arrangement for two voices and piano.
Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde
Six narrative movements make up Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. These songs are based on ancient Chinese poems about nature, death, and life, in German translation. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (Drinking Song of the Sorrow of the Earth) starts off an emotional series of reflections on farewells and new beginnings. Das Lied von der Erde was written for two voices. Today you’ll hear Feride Büyükdenktaş, a Turkish mezzo-soprano based in Graz who is currently a sensation on operatic stages. English tenor Stuart Jackson is also highly acclaimed, both in his native country and increasingly from abroad.
